Landscaping with
Native Plants in the Idaho Panhandle
In the fall of 2011, KNPS published Landscaping with Native Plants in the Idaho Panhandle. This 264-page easy reference guide grew out of our involvement in the 2006 update of Bonner County's 30 year-old land use code for unincorporated areas of the county.
Working with the County
A KNPS member served on the ad hoc committee developing the final recommendations for the new code adopted by the Bonner County commissioners in 2008. In addition, KNPS members created a comprehensive list, including botanical information, of “Native Plants Recommended for Landscaping.” The list became part of the new code designed to guide property owners in the selection and use of native plants.
From a List to a Book
Expanding on the work done for Bonner County, the book took several more years of research and preparation by KNPS members. Today it is the most complete guide for selecting our native plants for residential and commercial landscaping and for restoring private and public lands. It includes information on:
Landscape design,
Soil characteristics and erosion mitigation,
Suggestions for planting and maintaining a native landscape,
Specific descriptions and photos of 184 native plants,
Spiral bound and a handy size, Landscaping with Native Plants in the Idaho Panhandle is an easy-to-use, comprehensive guide for landscaping, land restoration, and watershed protection utilizing the natural advantages of our native plants. While it focuses on plants that work well in man-made settings, the full color photos also serve as a local plant identification guide. There were two printings of the first edition, followed by four printings, and counting, of the expanded 2012 second edition.
